The project is conceived as a synthesis between tradition and modernity, rooted in the urban fabric of Cuenca. Modernity is reflected in the use of pure forms, enhanced by details that enrich the configuration, and is complemented by the use of native materials anchored in the local architectural tradition, such as brick and stone.
The new concept for Hema Mini, by Area-17, marks the end of a journey that Area-17 Architecture & Interiors and Alibaba took together in redesigning the group’s convenience store format. The new Hema Mini is a local store that is mainly targeting families located within residential neighborhoods.
On May 2019, Panerai staged the “Survival Instruments for Modern Heroes” event at the Minsheng Art Wharf in Shanghai. For the impressive happening, the Italian luxury brand recreated an underwater labyrinth complete with aquatic creatures and deep sea caverns to highlight the potential of its diving watches and chronographs.
In the process of defining an innovative approach to local shopping, Alibaba Group asked Area-17 to design a new concept for convenience stores located in business districts and office areas. Named 盒马 F2 - Fast & Freshade, it sees the first tangible application in a 400 sqm store in Shanghai highly specialized to meet the needs of a clear-cut target of young business-people.
Centro Nuovo Flaminia is part of a wider urban renewal plan concerning the former “Magazzini Generali” area at the South-West of Brescia city center. It occupies 27'000 sqm, among which 7'000 are dedicated to a Coop supermarket. The shopping mall, designed by Area-17 and Inres, is the focal and vital point of a great park and recreation area.
Located in the city center, the new supermarket Coop Busto Arsizio is the core of a wider urban requalification area. The store occupies the volume of a former factory and has been redesigned by Area-17 and Inres as a connection between the neighborhood and the new project area. Roof-to-ceiling windows dematerialize large portions of walls and engage interiors and exteriors in a uninterrupted dialogue.
Extracoop is the new format by Coop Alleanza 3.0, one of Italy’s largest retailers. It brings to life a new approach to the shopping experience in a supermarket. Inres and Area-17 developed a highly innovative layout to meet the needs of more aware customers with specialized stores in both food and non-food areas. The first three Extracoop opened in 2017 inside the greatest shopping malls in North-Central Italy.
ESP shopping mall in Ravenna doubles its size and services with a brand-new wing designed by Area-17 and INRES. 19'000 square meters, hosting 50 new businesses, makes of ESP one of the most relevant shopping mall in Italy, counting now over 100 stores. While harmonizing with the earlier architecture, the design is meant to provide strong visual evidence of the extension, to be read even on an urban scale.
Formigine Ipercoop is the first Coop’s supermarket designed to be LEED Gold certified. From the exteriors to the interiors, each planning decision made by Area-17 and INRES focused on a logic of environmental sustainability and energy saving. A real tree embedded in the design of the façade reminds us of all the efforts made to think of architectural solutions in respect of the natural environment.
MareMà is a shopping mall designed by Area-17 and INRES within Parco Commerciale Grosseto, a significant intervention of urban renovation of the area north of Grosseto.
Area-17 designed the Jardín Yanuncay residential building for Ejeproy Developer in Cuenca, Ecuador. The almost 3'000 square-meter complex includes fifteen architectural units, specifically: six apartments, one penthouse, eight independent two or three-storey townhouses.
