Lao Cheng Xiang is the design conceived by Area-17 for a multifunctional complex in the ancient city of Tianjin. The clean monumental volumes enclose service apartments, commercial spaces, offices, and the biggest 3D theatre in all of China.

The permeability that characterizes the exterior shell is an explicit hint at the history of Tianjin, a city of embassies and one of the first Chinese towns to become open to foreign cultures.
